Connecting a gas hob must be done by a Gas Safe registered engineer. We fit the supply, connect the hob, carry out a tightness test, check the gas rate and burners, and leave it safe to use, with call-outs from £95 + VAT.

What Professional Gas Hob Connection Involves

Connecting a gas hob to the mains is more than tightening a fitting. Before the new hob goes in, our engineer isolates the supply, caps or removes the old appliance and checks that the existing pipework is sound, correctly sized and in a suitable position. The type of connection depends on the appliance.

  • Hard-piped connection: built-in hobs set into a worktop are normally connected with rigid copper pipework and an isolation valve, so nothing can be strained or kinked when drawers and units are used.
  • Flexible hose and bayonet: freestanding cookers are usually connected with an approved flexible hose to a bayonet fitting, with a stability chain or bracket so the cooker cannot be pulled forward onto the hose.
  • Tightness test: once connected, the whole installation is pressure tested with a manometer to prove there are no leaks.
  • Gas rate and burner checks: we check the appliance is burning the right amount of gas, every burner lights and holds a stable flame, and the flame failure devices shut off the gas when a flame goes out.
  • Ventilation and clearances: we confirm the room meets the manufacturer's ventilation requirements and that clearances to wall units, cooker hoods and combustible surfaces are correct.

If anything is unsafe, we explain it clearly and will not leave a dangerous appliance connected. Where an older appliance is being taken out, our gas appliance disconnection service caps the supply safely.

Can I Connect a Gas Hob Myself? UK Gas Hob Connection Regulations

No. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 require anyone working on gas fittings for payment to be on the Gas Safe Register, and they require all gas work to be carried out by a competent person. In practice that means only a Gas Safe registered engineer should connect a gas hob. A poorly made joint can leak gas into your kitchen, and a badly set-up burner can produce carbon monoxide.

DIY connection also has practical consequences. Most hob manufacturers will not honour the warranty without proof of professional installation, and many home insurance policies exclude damage caused by unauthorised gas work. When you sell or let the property, buyers, tenants and letting agents may ask who fitted the appliance. Always ask to see the engineer's Gas Safe ID card.

Gas Hobs and Cookers We Connect

  • Built-in gas hobs set into a worktop
  • Freestanding gas cookers and range cookers
  • 4-burner, 5-burner and 6-burner hobs
  • Hobs with high-output wok burners
  • Gas-on-glass and dual-fuel cookers
  • LPG conversions where the maker supplies a kit

Larger hobs and wok burners have a higher heat input, so we always check that the existing supply can deliver enough gas at the correct pressure before we connect them.

How Long Does It Take, and When Do You Need a New Gas Supply?

Swapping a hob onto an existing, correctly sized supply usually takes one to two hours, including testing. Allow longer if worktops need cutting or an old appliance has to be removed first.

You need a new or extended gas supply run when there is no gas point near the new position, when you are moving the hob to another wall or a kitchen island, or when the existing pipe is too small for a larger hob. Moving an existing appliance is covered by our gas appliance relocation service. If your supply has been capped for a kitchen refit, our gas appliance recommissioning service puts it back into safe use.

Gas Hob Installation FAQs

Can I connect a gas hob myself?

No. In the UK only a Gas Safe registered engineer may connect, disconnect or alter a gas hob. DIY gas work is illegal under the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998, can be dangerous and is likely to invalidate your home insurance and the hob warranty.

How much does gas hob installation cost?

Our Gas Safe engineer call-out starts from £95 + VAT. Disconnecting an old hob or cooker starts from £85 + VAT and relocating an appliance starts from £150 + VAT. If new pipework is needed we confirm a fixed price before any work starts.

How long does it take to connect a gas hob?

A straight swap onto an existing, correctly sized supply usually takes one to two hours including the tightness test, gas rate and safety checks. Jobs needing a new gas supply run, worktop alterations or LPG conversion take longer.

Should a gas hob be hard-piped or connected with a flexible hose?

Built-in hobs are normally hard-piped in copper with a rigid connection. Freestanding cookers are usually connected with an approved flexible hose and bayonet fitting plus a stability chain or bracket. We always follow the manufacturer's installation instructions.

Do I need a new gas supply for my new hob?

You need a new or extended supply if there is no gas point near the new position, if the existing pipe is too small for the hob's heat input, or if the hob is moving to a different part of the kitchen. We check pipe sizing and pressure before connecting.

Can you convert a gas hob to LPG?

Yes, where the manufacturer supplies an LPG conversion kit. Our engineer fits the correct injectors, adjusts the burners for LPG and tests the appliance. Not every hob can be converted, so we check the model first.
